von der vogelwaide was founded in 2019 by partners daniel vogelwaid, a trained enologist with international experience, and michael donabaum, whose background is in design. they are rebellious specializing in low-intervention, small-batch field-blend/cuvée wines, a move away from the traditional, single-varietal, and high-ripeness-focused approach of the region. the winery name is a reference to the famous medieval poet walther von der vogelwaide and the wines are characterized as a 'new bird' singing in the wachau valley (hence the beautiful labels!). this white blend is 40% grüner veltliner, 35% müller-thurgau, 25% riesling sourced from multiple tiny parcels across the vogelwaide holdings. ‘balztanz’ is a cuvée name they use to describe ‘the mating dance of the bird world,’ and it’s used for their lighter-bodied, more expressive or easygoing wines. the birds on the label are also non-native to the wachau valley, indicating that these are the two cuvées for which the duo purchases a small amount fruit to augment their tiny-parcel, steep slope estate fruit. it's highly expressive, fresh and complex with notes of green apple, pear, citrus zest, and herbs, with a structured, mineral-driven, and slightly creamy palate.

domaine des ardoisières is the star of savoie's wine renaissance. founded in 1998, the estate began as a grassroots project to restore ancient, abandoned mountain terraces in the french alps. the adventure began in 1997 when denis perroux, the mayor of the alpine village of cévins, wanted to revitalize the local community by replanting ancient, steep hillsides that had been abandoned. he partnered with michel grisard, a pioneer in biodynamic winemaking, who began painstakingly restoring the fractured schist terrace, and in 2003, grisard brought on brice omont, an agricultural engineer from champagne, who took over the reins completely in 2005 and shifted the estate's focus to maximizing the expression of these extreme, high-altitude alpine soils. this light bodied, low abv chillable red is a blend of mondeuse, pinot noir and gamay. is full of vibrant red berries, alpine herbs, and a distinct stony minerality with refreshing acidity. yum.

this leading alpine wine cooperative was formed in 2001 through the merger of two historic wineries - gries (est. 1908) and st. magdalena (est. 1930). it's composed of roughly 224 families who cultivate 350 hectares of vineyards ranging from valley floors to steep slopes at 1,000 meters above sea level . santa maddalana wines by law are a blend of 90% schiava (aka trollinger aka vernatsch) accented with 10% of lagrein. it's light to medium bodied with velvety fresh red fuit and floral notes.

olivier roten is the third generation winemaker managing his family estate with his wife, laine (an american from seattle) in the valais, switzerland's largest grape growing region. olivier and laine met doing a wine studies program, and their love story evolved over a meal and a glass (many glasses) of swiss wine. not long after they were married, olivier and laine decided to create a line of wines that honored both their love story and the best of swiss winemaking traditions. the essence of oliver’s alpine roots - and avalanche was born to help others identify with this classic taste of swiss heritage and the roten’s ongoing love story with its wine. this elegant 100% pinot noir is medium bodied with bright red fruit and lifted notes of vanilla and spice.
